What was the critical turning point when Railway faced insolvency while burning half a million dollars monthly?
Founder & CEO at Railway
Our growth had exploded due to a generous free tier, but our infrastructure bills exploded alongside it. We reached a point where we were burning 500,000 USD each month on cloud providers, much of it consumed by bad actors and crypto-mining abuse. We made the existential decision to retire the unmetered free tier and enforce usage billing. While we braced for backlash, genuine developers gladly paid for the service because the developer experience saved them countless engineering hours. That single move stabilized our unit economics and turned our revenue trajectory vertical.
