My maternal grandmother raised her family in the Soweto settlement of Kahawa West by working multiple jobs, including packaging meat, raising livestock, and brewing traditional beverages to fund my mother's schooling. My mother studied late at night with her feet in cold water to stay awake, eventually graduating top of her primary school and earning a scholarship. That relentless work ethic and resilience became foundational family values.
