How important is the pricing decision when you are just starting out, and how should founders think about it?

You want to find ten people who are genuinely big fans of what you are building. And the way you know they are real fans is that you do not make it too cheap and you definitely do not make it free. Free users do not tell you anything useful. If someone is willing to pay their hard-earned money for what you built, that is real information. That payment creates friction, and friction filters out the people who are just curious from the people who actually need your solution. Then you want those paying customers to feel special enough that they spread the word. Word of mouth from people who genuinely paid is the most credible and most scalable early growth channel you have.
