About Gaurav Jalan

Gaurav Jalan is the Founder and CEO of mPokket, a digital lending platform focused on providing credit access to students and young professionals across India. Q

What inspired you to build mPokket after working in global finance?

Question 1 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

The idea came from my experience as a student in the United States. Even as an undergraduate, I had access to formal credit through a credit card. When I returned to India, I noticed that students struggled to access even small amounts of money for educational expenses. That gap became the foundation for mPokket.

0
Q

What opportunity did you see in India's youth market?

Question 2 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

Young people in India had access to education, technology, and opportunities, but they lacked access to formal finance. Students and young graduates were often invisible to traditional lenders. I saw an opportunity to help them build their first credit history and become part of the formal financial system.

0
Q

What does mPokket's mission mean to you personally?

Question 3 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

It is about helping young people realize their aspirations. Providing a first loan may seem small, but it allows someone to build a financial identity. Once they become visible to the financial system, they can access larger opportunities throughout their lives.

0
Q

What was one of your biggest entrepreneurial mistakes?

Question 4 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

Early on, I believed a good product could explain itself. Over time, I realized that customers often need guidance, especially in financial services. Education, transparency, and helping users understand responsible credit are just as important as building a strong product.

0
Q

What advice would you give entrepreneurs about scaling a business?

Question 5 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

Focus on processes, not just growth. Growth is exciting, but if you only focus on speed, you can break important systems along the way. Strong operational processes create sustainable growth and help businesses scale effectively over the long term.

0
Q

How do you make difficult business decisions?

Question 6 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

I ask myself three questions. Is it right for the customer? Is it right for the business in the long term? And is it right for the company culture? If a decision creates short-term benefits but damages trust, culture, or sustainability, it is usually not the right choice.

0
Q

How has success changed you over the years?

Question 7 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

Success has changed my perspective more than anything else. Building a company has shown me how much impact a business can have on customers, employees, and society. That realization has given me a greater sense of responsibility and purpose.

0
Q

What is your definition of being rich?

Question 8 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

Financial security is important, but it is only one part of being rich. Real wealth includes freedom and purpose. Freedom means being able to make choices without fear, and purpose means working on problems that genuinely matter to you.

0
Q

How do you view the impact of AI on jobs and businesses?

Question 9 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

AI reminds me of the internet revolution in the late 1990s. It will transform industries, but it will not eliminate the need for people. Instead, it will replace repetitive tasks and allow people to focus on higher-value work, decision-making, and creativity.

0
Q

What should young professionals do to remain relevant in the AI era?

Question 10 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

They should learn how to use AI in their daily work. The people who will succeed are those who embrace these tools, improve their productivity, and use technology to make smarter decisions rather than resisting change.

0
Q

If your colleagues described you in three words, what would they say?

Question 11 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

Focused, ambitious, and resilient. I like to stay committed to solving problems, I believe in creating meaningful impact, and I understand that resilience is essential because challenges are part of every worthwhile journey.

0
Q

How do you disconnect from work and recharge?

Question 12 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

I enjoy meditation, spending time with my family, sharing meals together, playing board games, and having meaningful conversations. Those moments help me recharge and maintain perspective.

0
Q

How do you handle stressful situations?

Question 13 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

I often think about lighthearted memories and experiences. When you're dealing with a difficult decision, it can feel like everything depends on that moment. Remembering joyful moments helps bring perspective and reduces unnecessary stress.

0
Q

Is work-life balance realistic for ambitious professionals?

Question 14 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

I believe balance in life is important, but I do not separate work from life. Work is part of life. When you find work that aligns with your purpose and values, the need to constantly balance the two becomes much less significant because they naturally complement each other.

0
Q

What value would you most like to pass on to the next generation?

Question 15 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

Don't be limited by expectations or traditions. Focus on reaching your full potential. Every person has unique abilities, and real success comes from maximizing those abilities rather than simply following paths that others expect you to take.

0
Q

What legacy would you like to leave behind?

Question 16 of 16
Gaurav Jalan

I would like to be remembered for helping young people access opportunities and realize their potential. Through mPokket, we have tried to make financial services more accessible and help students and young professionals take meaningful steps toward their goals.
